Understanding Sleep Apnea and Its Broader Impact

Many patients may not realize that their chronic fatigue, daytime sleepiness, or even mood changes could be linked to an underlying sleep breathing issue. Snoring, for instance, is often more than just a nuisance; it can be a significant indicator of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). When breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep, the body is deprived of oxygen, which can have far-reaching health consequences.

Untreated sleep apnea can contribute to a range of serious health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. It's not uncommon for patients to seek help for these issues without realizing the root cause might be poor sleep. By identifying and treating sleep apnea, we can help patients improve their overall health and well-being. You can learn more about the potential health risks associated with untreated sleep apnea here.

Our Approach to Oral Appliance Therapy

For many patients diagnosed with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea or those who cannot tolerate CPAP, a custom-fitted oral appliance can be a highly effective treatment. These devices work by gently repositioning the lower jaw and/or tongue to keep the airway open during sleep. Unlike a generic mouthguard, our oral appliances are custom-made to fit each patient's unique anatomy, ensuring maximum comfort and effectiveness.

We utilize various FDA-approved oral appliance designs, each tailored to the individual's needs. The "art" of dental sleep medicine lies in selecting the right appliance and ensuring the patient can comfortably wear it throughout the night. Our team guides patients through the adjustment period, providing tips and support to help them get used to wearing the appliance. We understand that patients aren't seeking a piece of plastic; they're seeking the outcome: better sleep, reduced snoring, and improved health. Discover more about how oral appliances work.

Referrals for Pediatric Patients

While our primary focus is on adult dental sleep medicine, we recognize the importance of early intervention for children. If you suspect a child in your care might have sleep apnea, especially if they snore and show signs of teeth grinding (bruxism), we strongly recommend a sleep study. These symptoms, along with poor school performance, bedwetting, or issues with growth, should prompt further investigation.

For pediatric patients, we recommend referral to a pediatric sleep doctor. This specialist is best equipped to order and interpret a sleep study and determine the most appropriate course of action, which might include tonsil and adenoid removal if an anatomical airway issue is identified. While waiting for an appointment with a pediatric sleep doctor, which can sometimes take a few months, therapies like myofunctional therapy or palatal expansion can be considered. The quickest route to opening a child's airway, however, is often through a tonsil and adenoid removal if indicated by a sleep study. We are happy to discuss these considerations with you for your younger patients. You can learn more about pediatric sleep apnea treatment.
